What is Sodium Hypochlorite?

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), commonly known as bleach, is one of the most widely used disinfectants in healthcare facilities, clinical laboratories, hospitals, and public health settings. It is highly effective against a broad range of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and many spores, making it an essential disinfectant for infection prevention and control.

When dissolved in water, sodium hypochlorite releases hypochlorous acid (HOCl), the active disinfecting agent. Hypochlorous acid penetrates microorganisms and destroys them by:

  • Damaging the cell wall and membrane.
  • Denaturing proteins and essential enzymes.
  • Oxidizing nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), preventing microorganisms from multiplying.
  • Inactivating viruses by disrupting their protein coat and genetic material.

Because of this strong oxidizing action, sodium hypochlorite rapidly kills most disease-causing microorganisms when used at the correct concentration and contact time.
